The 18th Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) 2023 in Manila is taking place from 13–16 June 2023. ACEF is a forum for clean energy practitioners to come together and share insights into how we take action using clean energy solutions for a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific. The theme of this year’s ACEF is “Navigating toward a Carbon-Neutral Future through Clean Energy Solutions.

About the event:
This session focuses on business and financing models for enhancing access to energy access. The presentations highlight innovative approaches, successful programs, and the need for increased investments in decentralized renewable energy (DRE) and clean tech businesses in Asia. A speaker from Indonesia will describe the strategy of the MENTARI program to develops renewable energy anchor businesses within off-grid projects in Indonesia. A speaker from IRENA will draw on IRENA’s latest report to describe the global landscape of renewable energy finance and investment trends, and regional trends in Asia. A speaker from the World Resources Institute will discuss the challenges and opportunities in mainstreaming access to productive use of energy (PUE) products through decentralized renewable energy (DRE), examining different end-user financing and business models, such as pay-as-you-go and pay-per-use, with the aim to to understand their impact from the perspective of both the end-user and the implementing agency. Finally, a speaker from EnergyLab will session showcase a program in Cambodia that supports the development of clean tech businesses in the agri-fishery market, with a focus on solar technology

About the event:
The US government is supporting its partners in Southeast Asia to enable and attract the infrastructure investments needed to meet their ambitious net-zero goals through a variety of mechanisms and programs. These include USAID’s Corporate Clean Energy Alliance (CCEA), US Department of State’s Clean Energy Demand Initiative (CEDI), and USAID’s Southeast Asia’s Smart Power Program (SPP). The USG’s partnerships support solutions that expand access to renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, and demonstrate and deploy transformation enabling technologies. Together, they aim to identify, inform, and implement clean energy solutions.
Furthermore, USAID is committed to supporting Southeast Asia’s just and inclusive clean energy transition. USAID programs such as Enhancing Equality in Energy for Southeast Asia (E4SEA), and the Mekong Sustainable Manufacturing Alliance (MSMA), promote gender equality in the clean energy workforce, and work closely with public and private sector project partners.
This Deep Dive Workshop will highlight USG initiatives that help private sector champions meet shared climate and clean energy targets in Southeast Asia. The discussion will highlight policy recommendations, investment tools, financing mechanisms, and support programs the private sector and USG can offer to governments, developers and civil society to support clean energy and climate change initiatives in Southeast Asia. The session will also showcase how business leaders are strengthening ESG standards and building a more inclusive clean energy transition in Southeast Asia.

The adoption of artificial intelligence has recently accelerated, including the release of Chat GPT, and it is increasingly becoming a mainstream technology. This creates a range of benefits and risks. However, through concerted action, these and other tools can be harnessed to accelerate decarbonization across the economy.
Digitalization and smart energy technologies bring the promise of higher productivity, economic growth, improved efficiency, and convenience, among others. Converting this promise into a just transition involves several steps including identifying reliable data, making that data accessible, building the underlying data infrastructure, conveying data, and building the applications to support conveyance and the human interfaces to receive and comprehend the insights provided by that data. Many of the technologies, business operations and models, and data exist.
The spotlight session will discuss the applications of digitalization and smart energy technologies, case studies of impacts, and how it will transform our approach towards decarbonization across sectors.
