This short documentary presents the goals and impacts of the EU-funded Climate Change, Clean Energy and Urban Water in Africa Project.
Water infrastructure is among the largest users of energy in municipalities, leading to high running costs and significant emissions. A study found that in South Africa, municipalities could save 47% on their water-related energy bills by implementing energy efficiency measures and replacing ageing machinery.
Through a combination of capacity building, technical assistance and a focus on the importance of solid baseline data and cross-silo cooperation, the EU-funded Climate Change, Clean Energy and Urban Water in Africa project empowered South African municipalities to make such upgrades to their water infrastructure. The project helped municipalities fund, procure and implement clean energy and energy efficiency interventions, to cut energy costs, reduce emissions and improve service delivery.
This project was funded by the European Union, implemented by UNIDO and executed by REEEP in close partnership with the South African Government, Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and !Kheis Local Municipality.
