The Vienna Energy Club (VEC) is a unique cooperation framework consisting of 10 Vienna-based international organizations with respective mandates and specialities in the energy sector. The VEC members will provide their unique insights and experiences in this high-level panel discussion on the role of innovation in a net zero emissions energy transition.
Session Title: Innovation – A Catalyst for a Net Zero Emissions Energy Transition: Insights and Experiences of the Vienna Energy Club (VEC)
Meeting the UN 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement ambitions poses the challenge of reaching net zero emissions by mid-century. This calls for flexible, enabling policy and regulatory frameworks, the emergence of new business models, and a complete redesign of our energy systems within the next thirty years to enable a just and inclusive energy transition. Innovations in technology solutions on the supply-side, disruptive end-use technologies on the demand side, finance and societal practices are required. These include for instance renewable energy upscaling and integration, smart demand response, hydrogen replacing fossil fuels, the electrification of mobility, and greater digitization and automation.

Three topics will be addressed in the panel discussion, centering around the COP26 pillar of securing global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach:
- How can international organizations in the energy sector concretely support governments in enabling innovation?
- Why are credible long-term policy and funding objectives in R&D necessary to pave the way for a just, inclusive low-carbon energy transition?
- Why is the role played by basic and applied research in academia and government labs critical to boost innovation?
