65 million in Africa could access solar lighting by 2015: Lighting Africa report

Africa is poised to become biggest market for solar portable lights by 2015. This is just one of the key findings of the report entitled Solar Lighting for the Base of the Pyramid – Overview of an Emerging Market that the Lighting Africa program has just released.

A REEEP-funded project in Brazil has produced a Portuguese publication on solar water heating (SWH) systems, designed to raise awareness of the technology and its potential.

Workshop caps off ECATS project

The dramatic hill town of Enna, Sicily was the setting for the concluding Workshop event for the ECATS (energy efficiency cap and trade) project. The REEEP-funded initiative, led by Professor Giovanni Tesoriere and his team at the Università Kore di Enna, developed a proposed institutional framework for a cap and trade system, particularly focussing on the energy situation in Tunisia.

REEEP-funded expansion of CTI PFAN to Mozambique and Uganda shows results in AFRICEF business plan competition

Nine clean energy projects that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Africa by ca. 500,000 metric tons a year, the equivalent of taking 85,000 cars off the road annually, were presented to investors in Johannesburg at the CTI-PFAN Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing (AFRICEF) on 15 September 2010.

Harvesting lessons: 5 years of projects

New 'Compendium of Best U.S. Practices' in RE and EE aims to drive deployment worldwide

Three leading energy efficiency and renewable energy organizations – the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP, an international body), the Alliance to Save Energy (Alliance) and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) – have jointly released their Compendium of Best Practices: Sharing Local and State Successes in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy from the United States, in which state and local governments share the key elements of their programs, lessons learned and what made each program a success.

Energy Globe award for Solomon Islands lighting project

REEEP's very first project in the Southeast Asia Pacific Region has won the National Energy Globe Award for 2009 for the Solomon Islands. The “Pacific Micro Energy Services Company” initiative has brought solar-powered LED lanterns to remote rural households in the Solomon Islands and Kiribati, replacing the default kerosene lighting, which is expensive and has harmful health effects.

Transparency is critical: South Africa EGI report

In its report "The Governance of Power: shedding light on the electricity sector in South Africa", the Electricity Governance Initiative (EGI) makes a series of recommendations on how to promote open, transparent, and accountable decision-making processes in the South African electricity industry.

New integrated business model for African rural utilities

A recent REEEP project looked into building a business case for rural integrated energy service utilities (IEU) in several African countries. The basic idea was to look at how a rural utility there could supply on-grid, off-grid and thermal energy needs in rural communities in a way that could present a viable business model. The project budget was €114,850.
